Following the European Parliament's recent vote to introduce tariffs on Russian and Belarusian fertilizer imports, Fertilizers Europe (FE) has published a press release welcoming MEPs' decisive action to address the European Union's overdependence on Russian and Belarusian fertilizers. The tariffs will allow Europe to increase its strategic autonomy, weaken Russia's war economy, and at the same time protect our agricultural sector. A competitive European fertilizer industry is essential to ensuring food security, maintaining industrial resilience, and supporting the Union's climate ambitions.
According to Leo Alders, President of FE, Russian fertilizer manufacturers, taking advantage of low regulated gas prices in their country, have adopted a pricing strategy that has driven European manufacturers out of business, affecting thousands of jobs. With this vote, Parliament is sending a clear signal in favor of introducing tariffs on Russian and Belarusian fertilizers, recognizing the urgent need to address strategic vulnerabilities. By leveling the playing field, the tariffs will help ensure that European manufacturers can continue to supply their farmers with high-quality, sustainable fertilizers for years to come. Furthermore, Leo Alders calls for swift action by the European institutions to implement these tariffs and to ensure that they are rigorously enforced.
